Baby Sun Protection: Lotion, hats and Clothing

In a child's world, the sun often wears a big smile. Unfortunately, most of the ageing, cancer-causing effects of the sun are tied to the exposure a person receives before the age of 20.

That said, knowing the truth about the sun's rays shouldn't dim the joys of being outdoors. You can protect your baby's skin from the sun in three key ways:

  • Use sunscreen regularly. Be generous with SPF 15 or higher for babies over six months old. For younger infants, the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends applying sunscreen sparingly on the hands, face and feet if they're exposed, though covering these areas is the best approach to sun protection.
  • Try to stay out of the sun, especially between the peak hours of 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.
  • Cover up your baby's skin with clothes and hats.

Keep these three tips in mind and enjoy the sun and its benefits, like vitamin D!

SPF of 30 at least, according to SickKids Hospital. Also, if you can, get your baby to wear 100% UV protection sunglasses. Long sleeve and pant swim suits are best when swimming outdoors.
